Cape Cod is a cape jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean in the easternmost portion of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in the Northeastern US. Its historic, maritime character and ample beaches attract heavy tourism during the summer months. It becomes quite the buzzing beehive during this time. In 1914, the Cape Cod Canal was cut through the base or isthmus of the peninsula, turning nearly all of Cape Cod into what would technically be described as an island (though this term is not common in everyday speech). It can become very hard to access the Cape during this time as both of the bridges become very bogged down from Wednesday to Sunday.
Cape Cod is considered co-extensive with Barnstable County, though small portions of the towns of Bourne and Sandwich lie west of the canal. Both road bridges connecting the Cape to the mainland cross the canal: the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge and are also the escape routes in case of an emergency. In addition, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge carries railway freight and limited passenger services onto the Cape. The train also holds events during Christmas and is called either the dinner train or the trash train depending on what its cargo is. Cape territory is divided into fifteen towns with many villages; Provincetown lies at the tip of the peninsula, and can take over an hour to get to from Sandwich. It is right after Eastham, Wellfleet and Truro.
